COUGS WIN!
Washington State Women’s Basketball –
Arizona 88 at Washington St. 90
On Friel Court at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman,
Noon tipoff Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019

Before the game, according to the Arizona Daily Star, Arizona head Adia Barnes, talking about the weather in Seattle which caused cancellation of the Arizona State at UW game, said. “We need this game not to be cancelled.”
She was talking about the Arizona at WSU game.

And, it wasn’t. But, it also was not an Arizona win. Cougs win!

In the contest vs. Arizona in Pullman, Washington State's Borislava Hristova led Cougs with 37 points, including 25 in the second half, six rebounds and three assists. Her 37 points marked the fourth time this season she's scored 30+ in a game.

Herculean Effort Leads Washington State Past Arizona, 90-88

Borislava Hristova and Chanelle Molina combined for 65 points in the victory.

PULLMAN. –  Behind a combined 65 points out of Borislava Hristova and Chanelle Molina, Washington State (8-16, 3-10) outgunned the visiting Wildcats of Arizona (15-8, 5-7), 90-88, Saturday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum.

The Cougars stars put on a show in front of their home crowd, splitting the scoring duties over the 40 minutes of action to take down the Wildcats' the nation's second leading scorer.
After a game two nights prior, Molina came out scorching on Saturday afternoon as the junior point scored the Cougars' first eight points of the game and netted 12 in the opening stanza. It was the final four of those 12 that kick started a 9-0 closing run for the Cougars to capture a three-point lead after the first 10 minutes of action.

After falling behind by six midway through the second quarter Molina again would spur the Cougars' answer as she scored five of a quick seven for WSU to recapture the lead. From there, Hristova led a free flowing attack that saw WSU again close the frame strong with a 16-6 spurt to nab a 42-38 at the break.

The 10 from Hristova in the second quarter was only a warmup as the star forward scored 12 of the Cougars' 23 in the third and 13 of 25 in the fourth to help put away a pesky Wildcat team that refused to go home quietly. The Cougars would need every bit of the dynamic duos scoring thanks to the play of Aari McDonald, who scored nine points in the game's final 1:48 to make the home crowd at Beasley sweat.

In the end, Hristova and Molina would hit the free throws needed to keep the Wildcats at arms length while Molina got her hand on a final three-point attempt by McDonald, blocking the last ditch effort by the Wildcats' star and securing the victory for WSU.

WSU Coach Kamie Ethridge quote:

"Well what an entertaining game especially when we find away to win. I just am really proud of our team and how hard we sustained our effort. I think that has been a big problem for us to sustain effort, execution, and focus and kind of purpose through a 40 minute game. I thought this was one of our better games where we really, for the things we wanted to do before this game and for this game, I thought we were really good for most of the game. Two phenomenal performances by Bobi and Nelle."

WSU snapped a seven-game skid with the win over the Wildcats, their second-straight over Arizona and seventh in the last nine matchups.
The Cougs shot a season-best 57.4% (35-61) from the floor. It was their best shooting day in the last decade for WSU.

Borislava Hristova finished with 37 points, one shy of her career high, tying for the fourth most points in a single game in WSU history. She scored 25 in the second half, the second best scoring half in program history only trailing Tricia Lamb's 27 first half points against Arizona Jan. 7, 1999.

Hristova's 37 points marked her fourth 30 point game of the year and 13th 20+ point game of the season.

Hristova became just the seventh Cougar to record 500 points in a season as she finished the day with 505 for the year.

Chanelle Molina ended her day tying a season best with 28 points to go with nine assists and three rebounds. Molina moved into the program's single season top-10 for assists finishing with 126 for the year, ninth most in WSU history.

Together, Hristova and Molina scored 65 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out 12 assists while shooting a combined 25-of-35 (71.4%) from the floor. The 65 points were the most combined points for a Cougar duo in program history.

Not to be left out, Alexys Swedlund provided the support for the dynamic duo netting 12 points while Ula Motuga added two points to go with five rebounds and a career-best six assists.

With the tip of the contest, senior Maria Kostourkova officially played in her 120th career game at WSU, moving into a tie for 10th all-time in program history in games played. She finished her day with one point, six rebounds, and three assists as she was limted to just 19 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Cougars recorded 25 assists on 35 made baskets, one shy of their season-best of 26 assists.

Arizona put four in double-figures to counter the Cougars led by Aari McDonald's 26 points. McDonald entered the game averaging just under 26 points as the nation's second-leading scorer. Cate Reese (19), Sam Thomas (16) and Lucia Alonso (14) rounded out the Wildcats' scoring. Arizona shot 54.2% (32-59) from the floor.

The Cougars renew their Boeing Apple Cup Series rivalry with Washington Friday, Feb. 15 in Pullman. WSU took the opening game of the series in December, defeating the Huskies 79-76 in Seattle.

Men’s basketball
Saturday 4:30pm tipoff

Washington State at Arizona in Tucson

COUGS WIN!
GOT FIRST ROAD SWEEP SINCE 2009 after beating Arizona State in Tempe on Thursday and Arizona on Saturday

Washington State hands Arizona Wildcats fifth straight loss, 69-55

By Bruce Pascoe Arizona Daily Star

The Arizona Wildcats have lost five straight games for the first time since Lute Olson’s first year with the Wildcats in 1983-84, losing 69-55 to Washington State at McKale Center on Saturday.

Arizona shot just 31.7 percent from the field while WSU’s Robert Franks hit 8 of 11 3-pointers and tied his career high in scoring with 34 to lead the Cougars.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-12 while Washington State improved to 10-14 and 3-8, with its first win at McKale Center since Klay Thompson was a Cougar sophomore in 2009-10.

Combined with WSU's win over ASU on Thursday, it was the Cougars' first Pac-12 road sweep since 2009.

Down by 12 points at halftime, Arizona cut it to nine with nine minutes left on two free throws from Ryan Luther, but trailed by double digits most of the second half. Devonaire Doutrive made a layup with 2:13 to go to cut WSU’s lead to 63-53 but Franks hit his final 3 with 1:11 left to give the Cougars a 69-53 lead.

In the first half, Arizona shot just 27.3 percent while trailing Washington State 33-21.

The Wildcats struggled to shoot all over the court at the beginning of the game. Before halftime, Chase Jeter was 0 for 5 inside for Arizona while Brandon Randolph was 1 for 5.

Franks had 20 points in the first half while hitting 6 of 8 3-pointers to lead the Cougars. Franks had 34 points and 13 rebounds in WSU’s 21-point upset of ASU on Thursday.

Arizona missed its first five shots, one from each starter, while falling behind 7-0 at the first media timeout. The Wildcats were 0-7 from the field before Luther hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to break the drought, and a layup from Justin Coleman pulled UA within 7-5.

However, Franks hit a pair of 3-pointers to put WSU ahead 13-7 at the second media timeout, with 11:20 left in the half. Franks, a 6-foot-9 shooter who tested the NBA Draft last spring, later made it 28-14 WSU when he hit his fifth 3-pointer of the half.

Finally, after Coleman raced for a layup in the final minute to cut WSU's lead to nine points, Franks hit another 3 as the buzzer sounded.

Wins NCAA appeal: EWU QB Gage Gubrud transferring to Washington State

11:47 AM PT 2/9/2019

By Kyle Bonagura, ESPN

Former Eastern Washington quarterback Gage Gubrud has won an appeal for an additional year of eligibility and will spend his final season as a graduate transfer at Washington State.

WSU announced Gubrud, a two-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the best offensive player in FCS, joined the program Saturday morning.

"We are excited for Gage to come in and compete with the quarterbacks on our team," head coach Mike Leach said. "He is an extremely experienced and productive player who led Eastern Washington to great heights in his time there. It's not often that you can add a quarterback to your roster that has started 28 games and thrown for nearly 10,000 yards. We are looking forward to getting him on campus and finishing his collegiate career in a WSU Cougar uniform."

Gubrud suffered a toe injury in the Eagles' fifth game in 2018 that sidelined him for the remaining 10 games of the season and was initially denied a medical redshirt, according to the Spokesman-Review. However, because EWU advanced to the FCS national championship game, Gubrud ended up appearing in just one-third of the team's game, qualifying him for a medical redshirt under NCAA rules.

In 32 games over parts of four seasons, Gubrud threw for 9,984 yards with 87 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions for the Eagles. He threw for 5,160 yards in 2016 and was honored by the Touchdown Club of Columbus as the FCS Player of the Year. That season, in Gubrud's first collegiate start, he completed 34 of 40 passes for 474 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-42 win at Washington State.

It's the second straight season WSU will welcome a graduate transfer at quarterback, following Gardner Minshew's successful move from East Carolina to Wazzu in 2018. Minshew finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, while leading the Cougars to a school-record 11 wins.

In addition to Gubrud, the competition to replace Minshew is expected to primarily include Trey Tinsley, Anthony Gordon, Cammon Cooper and Gunner Cruz.

Weather warning in place for Palouse, L-C Valley

Snow, frigid temps and high winds combine to create perilous conditions

Lewiston Trib 2/9/2019

MOSCOW — The Palouse region and the surrounding areas are under a winter weather advisory until 1 p.m. today because of predicted snow accumulation, cold temperatures and wind gusts as much as 50 mph. In Nez Perce and Asotin counties, where a hazardous weather advisory is in effect, light snow is expected to create slick driving conditions and below-average temperatures throughout the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, Whitman and Latah counties could experience as much as 3 to 5 inches of snow and heavy winds by the time the advisory ends. In Lewiston, the weather service forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of as much as 1 inch of snow and wind gusts to 24 mph.

Throughout the Inland Northwest this weekend, periods of light snow will linger, and below-average temperatures will arrive today and persist through much of the week.

Just a few miles east of the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, the Lapwai-area forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of a half-inch of snow accumulation each day through Tuesday. The forecast is similar on the Palouse.

The high temperature on the Palouse today is expected to be 25 degrees, with a low of 18. Temperatures are expected to dip in the coming days, with nighttime temperatures falling to single digits. In the L-C Valley, today’s high temperature is forecast at 32 degrees, with a low of 18 degrees into the night. Sunday’s forecast calls for a high of 23 degrees and a low of 15 degrees in the valley.

As the winter weather hit the Palouse on Friday, snow created hazardous conditions on the roads. A driver east of Moscow was pulled from his truck Friday morning after a crash on Robinson Park Road.

Emergency medical technicians from the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department helped the driver exit the vehicle, which came to rest at about 9 a.m. on the roadway, apparently after sliding to the shoulder, then rolling on its side. The driver did not appear to be seriously injured, and declined to be taken to a hospital. It was one of several minor crashes throughout the region.

The weather service advises drivers to prepare for slippery road conditions, patchy blowing snow that could reduce visibility, and wind-chill recordings as low as 25 degrees below zero that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as few as 30 minutes.

Spokane gets more than 4 inches of snow and strong winds are making roadways hazardous

UPDATED: Sat., Feb. 9, 2019, 11:35 a.m.

By Will Campbell S-R of Spokane

Spokane woke up on Saturday to 4 to 7 inches of snow, a few power outages, lots of car crashes and some road closures including part of Interstate 90 near Kittitas.

Between four and seven inches of snow hit Spokane overnight, depending on the area, said Joey Clevenger, meteorologist at the Spokane branch of the National Weather Service

“With all the wind blowing it’s hard to get snow totals,” he said. “Davenport had a couple inches. Wenatchee had 5 to 14. Leavenworth had about 4 to 7. Ritzville had about 3.”

On Saturday morning, winds are blowing at 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts to 35, he said. Winds will be increasing in the Spokane area into the night with gusts up to 40, but then dropping after nightfall.

“The blowing snow is creating hazardous driving conditions,” he said.

Some roads and highways in Eastern Washington were shut down because of snow drifts, spinouts and low visibility.

Interstate 90 is closed between Kittitas and Vantage. State Route 27 is closed going both ways between Tekoa to Fairfield in Whitman and Spokane Counties. W.S. highway 2 is closed near Waterville, four miles west of Coulee City. State Route 172 is closed from Highway 2 to Mansfield. Get the latest traffic information here.

The temperature will peak at 19 degrees and an inch of snow could fall during the day. Check the most recent forecast here.

Interstate 90 in or near downtown Spokane saw more than 10 crashes from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

“We’ve had so many I couldn’t count them all,” said a Washington State Patrol Dispatcher.

Several flights coming into Spokane were canceled from cities including Seattle, Portland and Boise.

A fallen tree in North Spokane hit power lines at about 6:11 a.m. and caused an outage for 240 customers, according to Avista. Downtown Spokane also has a power outage at 7:47 a.m., affecting 142 customers. Click here to view active power outages.

City and county crews are working on a full-city plow, which was announced yesterday. Over 70 pieces of plowing equipment are being used, ad the city is asking drivers to park on the odd side of the street. Check the live-updated map of plowed streets here.

All the local ski resorts remain open: Mt. Spokane, Silver Mountain, 49 Degrees North, Schweitzer and Lookout Pass all report new snow.
