PULLMAN
(March 8, 2019) –Washington State claimed the series-opener 3-1 over CSUN at
Bailey-Brayton Field Friday afternoon. Four Cougar (5-7) pitchers combined to
hold Cal State Northridge (7-7) just one run on five hits and struck out 11 to
clinch the home opener after playing the previous 11 games on the road.
Dillon
Plew and Rob Teel each recorded two hits and starter Brandon White earned the
win after firing five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and three
strikeouts. Ky Bush worked a scoreless sixth inning, Zane Mills struck out five
in the seventh and eighth innings and Davis Baillie picked up his second save
of the season after working a scoreless ninth.
The
Cougars left runners on second to end the first and second innings. In the
third, WSU pushed three runs across on three hits and a pair of walks. With the
bases loaded and one out, Kyle Manzardo drove a pitch deep to center for an RBI
sacrifice fly, Collin Montez followed with a line drive two-out single back up
the middle to score a run and Teel capped the inning with an RBI-single into
left field for a 3-0 advantage.
White
cruised, allowing just one run on a one-out double in the fourth inning but
settled in and stranded a runner to end the fifth inning before giving way to
the Cougar bullpen.

MEN
BASKETBALL OSU comes to town looking for season sweep, WSU hopes to end
four-game losing streak
By LEXI
MCGONEGLE, Evergreen
March 8,
2019
WSU men’s
basketball is set to finish its last game of the regular season against Oregon
State on Saturday in Beasley Coliseum.
The
Cougars (11-19, 4-13) come into this matchup against the Beavers (17-12, 9-8)
after they suffered a 72-61 loss against Oregon on Wednesday night.
Currently
on a four-game losing streak, the Cougars will look to bounce back before the
Pac-12 Tournament next week in Las Vegas.
With 17
turnovers against Oregon in Wednesday’s game, Head Coach Ernie Kent said the
team needs to get back to who they really are.
“Early in
the year, the areas we struggled with most were the unforced turnovers that
gave easy buckets,” Kent said. “You can’t take care of the basketball when
you’re not sharing the ball or looking for people.”
With
Saturday as the last home game for three Cougar seniors, Kent said he expects
WSU to perform with lots of energy and focus while they are on the floor.
He said he
wants his team to focus on sharing the ball and running a more efficient
offense.
Now
holding the freshman scoring record, forward CJ Elleby said the team needs to
come ready to work and not focus on what happened during the game against the
Ducks.
“We know
that we are right there and can play with anyone in the conference,” Elleby said.
Over the
past two weeks, the Cougars have dealt with a handful of injuries including
four players who missed multiple games due to concussions. Junior forward Jeff
Pollard and junior guard Carter Skaggs returned to the lineup against the
Ducks, and the team is hopeful senior guard Viont’e Daniels will return
Saturday for his final home game.
Sophomore
small forward Marvin Cannon said having multiple guys out due to injuries can
throw off the whole balance of the team.
“It’s hard
when we only have eight guys,” Cannon said. “We need 10 guys to perform and
really do the things we need to.”
This
weekend’s matchup against Oregon State is going to be a tough one. The Beavers
suffered a devastating five-point loss against Washington in overtime Wednesday
night and have lost four of their last five games by a combined 11 points.
OSU guard
Stephen Thompson Jr. will pose a huge threat for the Cougars defense. The
6-foot-4-inch senior is averaging 15.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this
season.
Senior
forward Robert Franks will step on the Friel Court for the final time Saturday.
He is averaging 21.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest but is coming off a
disappointing performance against the Ducks where he only shot 3-13 from the
field.
“We have
one more game to play before we get on a plane and head to Vegas so we have
some things we need to figure out,” Kent said.
Tipoff is
set for noon Saturday in Beasley Coliseum. The game can be seen live on Pac-12
Networks.

Cougars
get thumped by California at tournament
Season
likely done after loss in Vegas
Mar 8, 2019 Moscow Pullman Daily News
WOMEN
BASKETBALL Cougars thumped by California at tournament in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS
— Washington State came up short for the second-straight game against Cal,
doing so Thursday in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament.
The 77-58
loss will likely end WSU’s year.
The
contest played out in similar fashion to the regular season finale four days
prior, where the Cougs could not overcome a pair of dry spells on the offensive
end that allowed the Bears to pull away.
After a
big first quarter that put WSU ahead by three, the Cougs went ice cold from the
floor to start the second quarter, missing their first 11 shots in that period.
Cal took advantage of WSU’s struggles to take the lead, putting together a 12-1
run.
Despite
the miscues, the Cougs would only trail by two at the halftime break thanks to
a closing run from behind the arc over the final three minutes.
After
rallying the Cougs to end the half, junior point Chanelle Molina caught fire in
the third, scoring 10 of her team-best 24 points in the period. However, Molina
could not single-handedly bring WSU back as the Bears pushed their lead to
seven.
Having
expended their energy trying to chase down the Bears in the third, the Cougs
ran out of gas in the fourth as Cal opened the quarter on a 13-1 run to put the
game away.
“I’d run
through a wall for them,” Molina said of her team’s coaching staff. “That’s how
much I respect them and love them and that’s how much I want to get better.”
The loss
dropped WSU to 9-21 and will almost surely end the team’s season.
