-From Pullman Radio News-
Landscape architecture
students have come up with conceptual ideas to transform Pullman. The students worked with the Pullman Downtown
Association on the project called Pullman Vital Signs. The students came up with an idea to string a
gondola system from downtown to campus.
The group also created a concept for a new airport terminal that
complements the beauty of the rolling hills of the Palouse. The students presented their ideas during a
recent workshop at the Pullman Depot Heritage Center.

Coug John Olerud Headlines 2019 Pac-12 Hall of Honor Class
Edited version
SAN FRANCISCO – The
Pac-12 Conference Wednesday announced the 2019 class to be inducted into the
Pac-12 Hall of Honor, including Cougar Hall of Famer John Olerud.
Formal induction will
take place on Friday, March 15 during a ceremony prior to the semifinals of the
2019 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament, presented by New York Life. Following
induction, the class will be honored during a special halftime ceremony of the
day's first semifinal matchup at T-Mobile Arena on Friday, March 15.
"John has always
been and continues to be a great ambassador for Cougar Athletics," said
Washington State Director of Athletics Pat Chun. "This is another
tremendous honor for John and his family, and more confirmation that his
accomplishments are befitting of the moniker, 'The greatest player in Pac-12
baseball history.'"
The 2019 Hall of Honor class
will be the 18th since its creation in 2002, and the second to feature
legendary figures from an array of sports after the Pac-12 last season expanded
the field to be inclusive of the broad-based athletics success across the
Conference of Champions. From NCAA champions, Super Bowl champions and World
Series champions to Olympic medalists to legendary coaches, the 2019 class
features a star-studded list of inductees with:
Meg Ritchie-Stone
(Arizona)
Frank Kush (Arizona
State)
Natalie Coughlin
(California)
Lisa Van Goor (Colorado)
Bev Smith (Oregon)
Dick Fosbury (Oregon
State)
Dick Gould (Stanford)
Ann Meyers Drysdale
(UCLA)
Ronnie Lott (USC)
Steve Smith Sr. (Utah)
Patricia
"Trish" Bostrom (Washington)
John Olerud (Washington
State)
Among the many combined
accolades of this year's inductee class includes: 14 Olympic medals, nine bowl
victories, eight members named to a Pac-12 All-Century Team, seven
All-Americans, five Olympic athletes, five NCAA team or individual national
championships as collegians, four Super Bowl victories, two members of the
Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, two members of the College Football Hall of
Fame, two members of their country's Olympic Hall of Fame, one member of the
Naismith Hall of Fame and one back-to-back World Series winner.
John Olerud, Washington
State (1987-89)
During his three seasons
in a Cougar uniform, John Olerud had one of the finest careers of any Cougar
student-athlete, in any sport, in Washington State history, rewriting the WSU
record books and becoming the only Cougar baseball athlete ever to be named
College Athlete of the Year. In 1988, Olerud became the only player in NCAA
history to win 15 games on the mound and hit 20 home runs in the same season,
going 15-0 with 23 home runs that year. Still holding numerous WSU records,
Olerud went 26-4 overall with a 3.17 ERA over 241.1 innings during his three
seasons, hitting .434 for Washington State. He set two Pac-10 records and 10
Pac-10 North marks, highlighted by his sophomore season when he was named
Athlete of the Year by Baseball America. In January prior to his junior year at
WSU, Olerud suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of brain seizure. He
missed the first 28 games of the spring season, but returned to hit .359 for
WSU over the final 27 games. Prior to his senior season, Olerud signed a
contract with Toronto and went directly to the Major Leagues. In 1993, he
became the first Blue Jay to win a batting title, hitting .363. Olerud played
for Toronto, the New York Mets and Yankees, Seattle and Boston during his
17-year career, winning back-to-back world series titles with Toronto in 1992
and 1993. In 2001 he joined his father, John Sr., in the WSU Athletics Hall of
Fame, and is a member of the College Baseball, State of Washington and Inland
Northwest Sports Halls of Fame. The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year
Award, given annually by the College Baseball Hall of Fame, was named in his
honor and in 2016, he was named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Century,
selected by a 36-member blue ribbon panel of experts chosen by the conference.
Celebrating the
broad-based example of excellence, the 2019 Pac-12 Hall of Honor class is part
of a rich history of champions for the Conference. The Pac-12 leads the list
for the most NCAA titles by any league with 516 across 29 different sports,
including nation-leading totals for men's (301), women's (185) and combined
(30).
The 2019 Pac-12 Men's
Basketball Tournament will take place Wednesday – Saturday, March 13-16 with an
action-packed 11 games over four intense days in the event's third year at Las
Vegas' hottest new sports and entertainment venue, T-Mobile Arena. Since moving
to T-Mobile Arena, the event has enjoyed back-to-back years of total attendance
over 80,000, just the second time in Tournament history that total attendance
surpassed 80,000 in successive years, including an event-record 86,910 in
2017's debut at the venue. All-Tournament Passes for this year's event, which
provide fans the best locations for the best price, and single-session tickets
are available at Pac-12.com/tickets.

Record enrollment and
R&D expenditures. The third-best fundraising year ever. Successful
reaccreditation with numerous commendations. Faster than anticipated progress
in restoring the university’s fiscal health.
In many respects, 2018

But how are these
accomplishments positioning the university to better serve the future needs of
the state of Washington? How does the university need to evolve to achieve its
Drive to 25 goals and fulfill its national aspirations?

questions and other important issues when President Kirk Schulz presents the
2019 State of the University address at 3:10 p.m. on March 26 in the Bryan Hall

By Jim Meehan of the
Spokane S-R
Gonzaga’s Mike Roth and
Washington State’s Patrick Chun are among 28 recipients of the NACDA Under
Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award.
The National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) honored Roth for the second time.
He was selected at the Division I-AAA level with Creighton’s Bruce Rasmussen,
Cal State Fullerton’s Jim Donovan and Florida Gulf Coast’s Ken Kavanagh.
Chun, who recently
completed his first year on the job at WSU, Iowa State’s Jamie Pollard, Central
Florida’s Danny White and North Carolina State’s Deborah Yow were honored at
the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level.
The award spans seven
divisions – FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, Division II, Division III, NAIA and
junior college/community colleges. Four winners are selected in each division.
The 28 winners will be
presented with their awards June 11 at NACDA’s 54th annual convention at the
World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Roth, who is in his 22nd
year at Gonzaga, is one of seven repeat recipients among this year’s 28
winners. Roth has overseen the rise of Gonzaga’s basketball programs on the
national scene as well as the recent addition of the Volkar Center for Athletic
Achievement.
Gonzaga student-athletes
compiled a 998 in the most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, sharing the
top spot nationally with Holy Cross and Villanova. Gonzaga has achieved a
99-percent Graduation Success Rate for two straight years, ranking No. 1 in
2017 and No. 2 in 2018.
Chun has instituted
programs to benefit student-athlete welfare, specifically mental health
awareness. He has guided an athletic department that had six sports reach NCAA
championships.
WSU athletics fundraising
set a record for donations last year and student-athletes established program
highs for grade-point average in two consecutive semesters.
