PULLMAN – Gage Gubrud will don the
blue practice jersey at Washington State for the first time on March 21, and
fans wanting to keep track of the the Cougars’ impending quarterback
competition will have 15 opportunities to do so throughout spring camp.
WSU released its full spring
practice schedule Tuesday and officially announced a date and time for the
Crimson and Gray game, which is making its way back to Pullman after spending
the last eight years at Albi Stadium in Spokane.
The spring scrimmage will be held at
1 p.m. on April 20 at Martin Stadium. Those who can’t watch in person will be
able to view the game on the Pac-12 Networks.
Cougar Athletics and WSU Student
Affairs have partnered to center the Crimson and Gray Game around mental health
awareness and suicide prevention, the school announced last June, and will dub
it “Gameday for Mental Health.”
The Cougars will hold 13 spring
practices at Rogers Field and Martin Stadium before the spring game, then one
more after – as has been customary under coach Mike Leach, entering his eighth
season at WSU.
WSU’s QB race again figures to be
the top storyline heading into spring practices. Gubrud, the Eastern Washington grad transfer who signed a
letter of intent with the Cougars over the weekend, will likely
compete for the job with redshirt seniors Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon.
Fans will also get their first real
glimpse of presumed starting nose tackle Lamonte McDougle, a former Freshman
All-American at West Virginia who had to redshirt last season because of NCAA
transfer rules and primarily practiced with WSU’s scout team.
Gubrud is one of nine newcomers
already enrolled at WSU and eligible to compete this spring. The others include
quarterback Gunner Cruz, wide receiver Billy Pospisil, linebacker Rocky
Katoanga and defensive backs Gatlin Grisso, Daniel Isom, Derrick Langford,
Bryce Beekman and Shahman Moore.
A few practice times still haven’t
been determined, but these are the official spring football dates: March 21
(3:30 p.m.), March 23 (TBA), March 26 (3:30 p.m.), March 28 (3:30 p.m.), March
