Cougs' Comeback Falls Short in Seattle
1/21/2018 | Women's Basketball from WSU Sports Info
SEATTLE, Wash. - Down by as much as 19 points in the second
half, the Cougars (9-11, 2-6) managed to climb to within three points of the
home Huskies (7-12, 1-7) only to come up just short of pulling off the comeback
in Seattle Sunday afternoon.
In the end, Washington was able to hold off the Cougars
charge, winning 56-49, to split the Boeing Apple Cup series with Washington
State for the year and earn its first Pac-12 victory of the season. For WSU,
the epic comeback was necessary as the Cougars could not get anything going
offensively in the first 20 minutes of play, shooting just 19.4% from the floor
to allow the Huskies to open up a 17-point lead at intermission. Even after
hitting six of their 12 shots in the third quarter did not make much of a dent
in Washington's lead as the Cougs stared at a 13-point deficit heading into the
fourth. Despite the deficit, the Cougs would continue to push behind the play
of Chanelle Molina, Nike McClure, and Kayla Washington who scored 27 of the
Cougs' 34 season half points. WSU would chip away at the Huskies' lead until a
Kayla Washington layup with 1:17 got WSU within just one-possession for the
first time since the opening moments of the first quarter. Unfortunately for
the Cougs, the three-point margin would be as close as they would get as a pair
of late mistakes allowed the Huskies to survive the comeback and score the
victory on their home court.
Stat of the Game =
The Cougs fell for just the second time on the year when
outshooting their opponent as both teams struggled from the floor with WSU
shooting 33.3% (21-of-63) while UW shot just 31.6% (18-of-57).
Info =
Chanelle Molina led the Cougs in scoring for the third time
in Pac-12 play as the sophomore netted a game-high 17 points including hitting
3-of-7 from deep.
Kayla Washington added 10 points while Nike McClure chipped
in nine points to go with six rebounds and four blocks.
The Huskies outrebounded the Cougs by one rebound (43-to-42)
as Hannah Johnson grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to lead UW while Louise
Brown nabbed a Cougar-best 11 rebounds. Johnson completed the double-double as
she posted 13 points to go with her rebounds.
Amber Melgoza led the Huskies with 14 points while Jenna
Moser added 10.
Entering the game second in the Pac-12 in scoring and
averaging over 25-points per game in Pac-12 contests, Borislava Hristova saw
her double-digit scoring streak come to a halt at 12 games as the
super-sophomore finished with three points.
The Cougars return home to take on USC Friday to begin a
weekend against the LA schools. The tilt with the Trojans is scheduled for 7
p.m.

Washington women beat Washington State 56-49 for first
conference win of season
Sun., Jan. 21, 2018, 3:44 p.m.
SEATTLE (AP) – Hannah Johnson tied a career high with 13
points and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds to help Washington defeat
Washington State 56-49 on Sunday to snap a seven-game losing streak and pick up
its first Pac-12 victory of the season.
Johnson turned in her second double-double in two games and
third in the last four as the Huskies (7-12, 1-7) rebounded from a 78-75
overtime loss at Washington State (9-11, 2-6) on Wednesday and denied the
Cougars their first season sweep since 2013-14 season.
Amber Melgoza added 14 points and Jenna Moser 10 for
Washington, which took a 32-15 halftime lead after the Cougars shot just 19
percent.
The Cougars, trailing by 15 entering the fourth quarter,
used a 12-2 run, with five points from Chanelle Molina, to get within three,
52-49, with 1:17 remaining.
Mai-Loni Henson found herself alone for a jumper with 46
seconds left after a Cougar tried to throw the ball off her legs while falling
out of bounds. It was Washington’s first field goal in nearly six minutes and
gave the Huskies a 54-49 lead. After Washington State was called for a moving
screen, Melgoza added two free throws with 24 seconds remaining.
Molina scored 17 points and Kayla Washington 10 for the
Cougars while Louise Brown grabbed 11 rebounds. Borislava Hristova, who scored
25 points in Wednesday’s victory and came into Sunday’s contest as the Pac-12’s
leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, made only 1 of 11 shots and finished
with three points.

After the first game of the season in which neither Malachi
Flynn nor Robert Franks scored in double figures, Thursday at Colorado, both

Sophomore Carter Skaggs was the third Cougar to score in
double figures with 13 points on 3 3-pointers and 5-for-10 shooting from the

Utah rolls past Washington State men 82-69
Sun., Jan. 21, 2018, 7:41 p.m.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) –
Tyler Rawson scored 22 points and knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers as
Utah beat Washington State 82-69 on Sunday night.
The Utes (12-7, 4-4 Pac-12) won their second consecutive
game for the first time since late December and the Cougars (9-10, 1-6) have
now lost six of their last seven.
Utah got contributions from some unlikely faces en route to
the double-digit victory in which it never trailed.
Rawson went 6 for 7 from 3-point range after not scoring in
double digits the last three games. The 22 points were his second-highest total
of the season and the most since Dec. 20.
Guard Sedrick Barefield came off the bench for the first
time during Pac-12 play and found the shooting touch that had disappeared as he
was a combined 1 for 16 in the previous three games. The junior finished with
14 points.
Forward Gabe Bealer was aggressive and surpassed his point
totals from Utah’s previous eight games in the first half alone. His 15 points
were the most since scoring a season-high 20 in the second game of the year.
The reliable Justin Bibbins added 13 points and season-high
12 assists.
Washington State trailed by 42-32 at halftime, but cut the
lead to six points after a 7-0 run early in the second half. The Utes answered
with a 14-5 run that essentially put the game away.
Malachi Flynn (19 points) and Robert Franks (18 points)
carried the load for Washington State.
Big picture
Washington State: The Cougars live and die by the 3-pointer
and the long ball (9 for 25) kept them alive against the Utes when the game
could have been uglier. Defense, however, continues to be an issue and WSU
struggled to get stops.
Utah: The Utes didn’t have to rely so much on Bibbins and
Dave Collette to carry the scoring load and even survived limited minutes for
Donnie Tillman due to foul trouble. Utah needs more nights like this where
Barefield and Bealer have strong offensive nights.
Up next
Washington State: Travels to face Washington on Jan. 28.
Utah: Travels to face No. 16 Arizona State on Thursday.
