PULLMAN, Wash. – Led by a hat trick by junior Morgan Weaver, Washington State soccer (12-5-1, 5-5-1), came out victorious in a heated rivalry match with Washington (8-10-1, 3-8-0) in the Boeing Apple Cup Series Friday night. Final score: 3-1 Cougs over UW.

From the outset Weaver was in control of the game for the Cougars as the star junior found the back of the net for the first time in the 11' on what would be the first of nine shots on goal for WSU. Taking a ball from Hanna Goff on the left side of the box, Weaver cut back to the middle a ripped a shot center frame, over the top of Huskies' keeper to put WSU up early.

After missing a handful of chances to extend the lead in the first half, Weaver came up with the eventual game-winner for the Cougs in the 62' as she forced a mistake by the Huskies' defense and cleaned up the loose ball in front of an empty net for her second goal of the night. The Huskies would draw within one just one minute later on a fine individual effort by Pascale Dumesnil who knifed through the center of the field and fired a shot from 22 yards out for the goal. With the game getting out of hand and tempers flaring the Coug' star put the match away for good in the 88' with a 90-yard sprint off a perfect outlet pass by senior Maddy Haro. With the ball blasted down field, Weaver out ran the Huskies' center backs and one-touched it by the keeper before tapping home her third and final goal of the night.

Stats:
WSU improved its unbeaten streak to 15 games against the Huskies with the win Friday night.

No. 10 Washington State hoping to ‘get revenge’ on Cal after stinging loss in 2017

Two minute drill: Keys to victory for Washington State against Cal

PAC-12 FOOTBALL
At Martin Stadium, Pullman

Saturday, Nov. 3: California Golden Bears at Washington State Cougars, 7:45 p.m. PDT TV: ESPN

PULLMAN – We could track down the statistics, list all the matchup advantages and compile the supporting evidence to back up our belief that No. 10 Washington State will cruise past Cal tonight at Martin Stadium, improve to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 in the Pac-12, and continue to rise up the College Football Playoff rankings. Or we could just point to a single number that would tell us most of what we need to know about the Pac-12 North matchup – at the very least, how it’ll conclude: 49. Jeff Faraudo of “Cal Bears Maven” dug through the school’s record books to discover that the Golden Bears haven’t defeated an Associated Press top-10 team on the road since 1969 – 49 years. As Faraudo points out, somewhere in the ballpark of 18,000 days. Cal’s had 37 opportunities during that stretch. Aside from a 15-15 tie in 1974 at USC, the Golden Bears have lost ’em all. Five decades of futility for Cal against top-10 teams on the road will continue Saturday night, as will WSU’s magical 2018 season.

The pick: Washington State 28, Cal 14.

BENGALURU, India - Taking her talents to the international stage before officially beginning her career as a Coug, freshman Ula Motuga made the most of her time with Team Australia over the past week as the Gems took home a bronze medal at the 2018 U-18 Asian Championships.

The Gems performance earned the young Australian team a spot in the 2019 U-19 World Cup, qualifying through the Asian zone for the first time. The World Cup will be held next summer in Thailand from July 20-28, 2019.

At the championships, the Gems posted a 4-2 overall record falling in the semifinals to the eventual runner-up Japan before defeating Korea in the third-place game to end the tournament. Throughout her week in India, Motuga proved herself among her peers, finishing the championships with an average of 8.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and just under 1.0 assists and steals per game in 19 minutes of action. The freshman's biggest performance came against the best competition as Motuga posted her tournament best of 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting against Japan in the semifinals. The game prior, Motuga's eight points, four rebounds, and four steals were critical in the Gems' win over New Zealand which officially punched the Australians' tickets to Thailand next summer.

Motuga will rejoin the Cougars later in the week before making her collegiate debut in the Crimson and Gray Sunday, Nov. 11 against Saint Mary's. The Cougars officially open the 2018-19 season Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Utah State at Beasley Coliseum.
