Cougars Beat Oregon With Walkoff
Wild Pitch in 10 Innings
Sunday from WSU Sports Info
PULLMAN (April 14, 2019) – Collin Montez raced home after
the ball got away from the Oregon catcher for an 8-7 win in 10 innings at
Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars received three-hit games from Dillon Plew and
Collin Montez, recorded 13 hits and stole five bases, the most since 2017. WSU
took a 7-3 into the ninth inning but Oregon tied the game with a two-out grand
slam to right field.
In the first, Plew led off with a walk, Danny Sinatro
reached on an Oregon error and both moved up a base on a Andres Alvarez
sacrifice bunt before Jack Smith doubled to left-centerfield to give WSU a 2-0
lead.
In the second, Garrett Gouldsmith led off the inning with a
single back up the middle, was bunted to second and later scored on a Plew
RBI-single to left field.
In the fourth, Oregon finally got to Cougar starter Tyson
Guerrero with a solo homer to left field to cut the WSU lead to 3-1.
In the fifth, the Cougars put runners on second and third
with one out and pushed one run across on an Oregon fielding error and Kolden
later drove an 0-2 pitch into right-centerfield for a two-out two-run double
and a 6-1 WSU lead. In the sixth, Plew led off the inning with a single to
right field, was bunted to second and moved to third on a wild pitch before
scoring on an Andres Alvarez RBI-single the other way into right field for a
7-1 advantage.
In the seventh, Oregon took advantage of a pair of walks and
a hit-by-pitch to score a pair of runs on two sacrifice flyouts to cut the WSU
lead to 7-3.
In the ninth, Oregon loaded the bases after a walk, an
infield single and another walk. WSU went to the bullpen for freshman
righthander Connor Barison who struck out the first batter he faced and
followed with a fly out to left field for the second out but the next batter
lofted a ball the other way and just over the right wall for a game-tying grand
slam.
In the 10th, Montez beat out a high-chopper infield single
to second base that the Duck second baseman threw away on the play, putting
Montez on second base. With Brody Barnum at bat, Montez moved up to third on a
wild pitch and two pitches later came home as the ball four pitch to Barnum got
away from the Duck catcher, allowing Montez to race home for the game-winner.

Oregon Ducks lose to Washington State in baseball series
finale
Posted Apr 14, 5:38 PM year 2019
Spencer Steer hit two home runs against Washington State on
Sunday, including his second grand slam in two days.
By Joel Odom Oregonian
The Oregon Ducks came all the way back from a six-run
deficit to tie the game in the ninth inning on Spencer Steer’s grand slam, but
the Washington State Cougars scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th
to win their Pac-12 baseball series finale 8-7 on Sunday afternoon in Pullman.
Steer, who also hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth
inning, belted a grand slam for the second consecutive game to tie it at 7-7 in
the ninth. Ducks pitcher Ryne Nelson then sat down the Cougars in order in the
bottom of the frame, getting the last two batters on strikeouts.
Oregon got runners on first and second in the top of the
10th, but then Tanner Smith grounded out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 10th, Collin Montez singled and then
advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved over to third on Nelson’s wild
pitch, and then headed home on a second wild pitch.
Nelson (2-1) was saddled with the loss. WSU’s Bryce Moyle
(1-0) picked up the victory after getting Smith out in the top of the 10th.
Oregon had trailed 7-1 before rallying for two runs in the
seventh on sacrifice flies by Sam Novitske and Smith. Then came Steer’s slam.
Despite the loss, the Ducks took the series 2-1 and have won
five of their past six.
Next up: Oregon stays in eastern Washington for one more day
to take on Gonzaga at 3 p.m. Monday. Then the Ducks return home for a
three-game series against No. 2 Stanford from Thursday to Saturday. First pitch
on Thursday is set for 7 p.m. at PK Park.

BASEBALL Cougars can’t atone for mistakes
WSU surges late but earlier errors are too much to overcome
in 11-8 loss to Oregon
By STEPHAN WIEBE Moscow Pullman Daily News
PULLMAN — When it rains, the Ducks come out to play.
The Oregon baseball team hit three home runs, including a
grand slam, and held on to beat Washington State 11-8 despite a six-run eighth
inning by the Cougars on Saturday.
“We continue to give up runs and hits,” Washington State
coach Marty Lees said. “There were three home runs today. All that needs to
improve.”
As the steady rain fell at Bailey-Brayton Field, grim seemed
the chances that Washington State (7-25 overall, 0-11 Pac-12) would beat Oregon
(21-12, 7-4) — until the sixth inning gave a glimmer of hope.
WSU trailed 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, and
10-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
That’s when WSU got rolling with a single into right field
by Andres Alvarez and a pair of walks to load the bases.
Designated hitter Kyle Manzardo cleared the bases by
smacking a double to right-center field. The freshman scored two batters later
on a single by backup catcher Koby Blunt, a Clarkston High product.
Leadoff man Dillon Plew drove in the Cougars’ final two runs
of the inning to make it a 10-8 game.
But the fiery rally wasn’t enough to overcome WSU’s woes
earlier in the contest and the Ducks held the Cougars off the scoreboard in the
ninth to seal their second win of the weekend.
In the third, three WSU errors led to two runs after the
Cougars had seemingly ended the inning.
WSU center fielder Danny Sinatro caught a fly ball with two
outs and the Cougars started running toward the dugout, but Sinatro dropped the
ball on the transition to his throwing hand, and the umpires called it a live
ball.
Oregon’s Evan Williams scored on the play and the Ducks
brought home another runner in the next at-bat, this time on a fielding error
by Plew at third base.
“It’s just stuff that’s a lack of concentration,” Lees said.
“As I preach to these guys, when we do those fundamental things, you’re not
guaranteed to win, but you’ll sure have a much better chance to win.”
Two innings later, Oregon’s Spencer Steer smacked a grand
slam over the wall in right-center. Williams and Tanner Smith also hit long
bombs for the Ducks a day after they beat the Cougs 21-3.
Sam Smith added four hits and two RBI for Oregon.
Manzardo (four RBI, two hits, one run) and left fielder
Collin Montez (two hits, two RBI, one run) were the lone bright spots for the
Cougars.
With the loss, Washington State has won one of its last 18
games and remains winless in conference play. The Cougars are last in the
Pac-12 in runs scored (130) and ERA (6.85), and 10th in errors (47).
They conclude the series with Oregon at 12:05 p.m. today at
Bailey-Brayton Field.

WSU receivers’ sharpness better in second spring scrimmage
As usual, Mike Leach is still seeking more consistency.
By Jeff Nusser Coug Center
Apr 14, 2019, 10:24am PDT
Trey Tinsley was solid, Anthony Gordon struggled, and
Kassidy Woods had a huge day as the Washington State Cougars held their second
scrimmage — the last one before the Crimson and Gray Game in Pullman next
Saturday.
Gage Gubrud remains a limited participant in practices with
an ankle injury, so Tinsley and Grodon continue to be the two primary
combatants for the starting QB. Tinsley was 14 of 24 for 169 yards (7.0 yards
per attempt) and three touchdowns, while Gordon was 13 of 23 for 202 yards (8.8
ypa) and three touchdowns with three interceptions.
“I think Gordon and Tinsley are still on top, although I
didn’t think Gordon had as good a day today,” Leach said. “And I thought Cam
(Cooper) took some strides today.”
Cooper was 10 of 16 for 159 yards (9.8 ypa) and four
touchdowns after having a strong day of practice on Tuesday, also.
Woods, meanwhile, led all receivers with 120 yards and a
touchdown on six catches; at 6-foot-4 and 220-pounds, he seems to be taking
very nicely to his move to inside receiver. A week after lamenting the
concentration of his receivers following the first scrimmage, Leach thought the
group was improved.
“I can only really remember one dropped ball with the first
two groups,” Leach said. “I thought we did catch the ball better. Ran better
routes, too.”
Max Borghi seemed to split reps equally with Clay Markoff
and Cole Dubots, with Markoff leading in both touches (eight) and highlights
(one).
Defensively, the new DBs continue to impress, particularly
Daniel Isom. He’s a juco bounceback from Northern Illinois who picked up an
interception and also had a knockdown in the end zone:
Despite only being in the program since January, he already
sounds like a veteran, saying after the scrimmage: “I’m just trying to make
sure I understand the defense, do my job.”
You can check out the full set of stats here. Highlights are
at the top of the post.
The Cougars have two more football practices this week on
Tuesday and Thursday before the Crimson and Gray game next Saturday, which will
begin at 1 p.m.

WSU picks up commitment from offensive lineman Dylan
Mayginnes
The three-star prospect will join his brother, Hunter, as a
Coug.
By Jeff Nusser Coug Center
Apr 14, 2019, 11:21am PDT
The Washington State Cougars picked up their second
offensive line commit and third commit overall in the 2020 class when Dylan
Mayginnes committed to the program via Twitter:
Mayginnes is a low three-star prospect out of Chandler,
Arizona, who has no other reported offers but didn’t feel the need to wait
around for others to come. Other programs sniffing around include the Arizona
Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, California Golden Bears, UCLA Bruins and
Washington Huskies.
Mayginnes’ older brother is Hunter Mayginnes, a redshirt
freshman on team who joined WSU last fall as a blueshirt after a rocky
recruitment that involved ASU revoking his scholarship offer. The younger Mayginnes
obviously didn’t want to wait around and play that game after big bro’s
journey.
Dylan fits the mold of offensive linemen recruited by Mason
Miller, in his second year in charge of that group at WSU — at 6-foot-5 and 285
pounds, he has a big frame that will lend itself to adding weight rather than
shedding it.
Hunter and Dylan also will join a long list of brothers to
play at WSU.

COUGARS UPSET NO. 10 UCLA, 4-2
From WSU Sports Info
PULLMAN, Wash. – On her fourth match point of the day,
senior Aneta Miksovska propelled the Cougars to their biggest upset in program
history as No. 42 Washington State defeated No. 10 UCLA, 4-2, Friday afternoon
at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
With the win the Cougars improve to 18-7 on the season, 3-5
in Pac-12 play. The top 10 victory is the program's highest-ranked win, besting
WSU's victory over No. 20 California during the 2002 season. It also marked
just the second win over UCLA in the 26-match series history, the last coming
in 2001. UCLA falls to 14-6, 6-2 in conference action.
Miksovska seemed in control early, winning the first set 6-1
against Gabby Andrews at No. 5. Andrews rebounded in the second set, winning
6-3 and forcing a decisive third. At 5-4, Miksovska served for the match,
holding two match points, but could not put her opponent away. After forcing a
tiebreaker, the Cougar senior jumped out quickly and never looked back, taking
a 6-1 lead then closing on the win on her fourth match point. The win was her
96th as a Cougar, fourth all-time at WSU, and considering the circumstances,
the biggest of her career.
"Today was a total team victory," said WSU Head
Coach Lisa Hart. "I am so proud of the way every single player handled
themselves. I think it is fitting that our seniors who have meant so much to
our program earned the final points of the match. We will enjoy the victory
tonight and get ready for USC Sunday. Go Cougs!"
The day began with doubles and all three matches came down
to the wire. UCLA's Abi Altick and Alaina Miller, ranked 46 nationally,
defeated Michaela Bayerlova and Miksovska at No. 3 to give UCLA the early lead.
The Cougars responded as Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato defeated No. 5 Ayan
Broomfield and Andrews, 6-3, at No. 1, pushing the doubles point to No. 2.
There, WSU's Yang Lee and Melisa Ates held a lead in the tiebreaker but could
not close out as UCLA's Jada Hart and Elysia Bolton, ranked No. 12, rallied for
a 7-6 (7-5) win, giving the Bruins the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Cougars were first to strike in singles when Lee closed
out a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Miller at No. 4, tying the match at 1-1. It proved
to be the only match that was won in straight sets.
Backed by thunderous groundstrokes, Bayerlova, ranked No.
52, rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Hart at No. 1, giving WSU a 2-1 lead.
Hart, ranked No. 38, is the fifth nationally-ranked player Bayerlova has
defeated this season.
At No. 3, Mylonas grinded her way to victory as she rallied
from a set down and 2-5 in the third set to defeat No. 122 Altick, 2-6, 6-2,
7-6 (7-5), pushing the Cougar lead to 3-1 and within one match of victory. The
Bruins cut the lead in half as Broomfield came back from a set down to defeat
Sato at No. 2, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The final match was stopped once the team outcome
was decided. Ates was leading Taylor Johnson, 4-6, 6-3, 3-2 at No. 6.
The Cougars return to action Sunday when they host No. 13
USC at 11 a.m. The match will be played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at
Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

NO. 13 USC HOLDS OFF COUGARS, 4-1
From WSU Sports Info
PULLMAN – Looking for its second-straight upset victory, the
No. 42 Washington State tennis team fell just short against No. 13 USC as the
Trojans won 4-1 Sunday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery
Fieldhouse.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 18-8 on the season, 3-6 in
Pac-12 play. USC improved to 17-5, 7-2.
Play began with doubles and for the second-straight match,
all three doubles were highly contested. At No. 2, the Cougar duo of Melisa
Ates and Yang Lee held a 4-2 lead over Becca Weissmann and Danielle Wilson but
could not take advantage as USC rallied for four-straight games to take the
set. At No. 3, WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Aneta Miksovska fought back from a
3-5 deficit to tie the match at 5 against Constance Branstine and Estella
Jaeger. After saving five set points, the sixth was not to come as USC captured
the doubles point with a 7-5 win. The No. 1 match between WSU's Hikaru Sato and
Tiffany Mylonas against Rianna Valdez and Angela Kulikov, ranked No. 5
nationally, was stopped with USC leading 2-1 in the tiebreaker.
In singles play, Bayerlova, ranked No. 52, started fast and
never looked back as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 46 Salma Ewing.
The win was Bayerlova's third straight over a ranked opponent and moved her to
22-5 on the season.
After capturing the first set at No. 2, WSU's Sato was in a
battle against Kulikov, the nation's 95th-ranked player. Kulikov outlasted Sato,
winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to push the Trojan lead to 2-1. USC increased its lead to
3-1 when Ana Neffa rallied from a set down to defeat Mylonas, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in
a match that lasted nearly three hours.
The deciding match came at No. 4 where Willson outlasted Lee
in a marathon match, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The two remaining matches were
stopped once the team victory had been decided. AT No. 5, Miksovska was leading
Branstine, 6-2, 4-1, and Ates was leading Sydney Van Alphen 4-1 at No. 6
The Cougars conclude their 2019 regular season schedule
Saturday when they host No. 15 Washington at 11:45. Prior to the match, seniors
Miksovska and Mylonas will be recognized for their contributions to Cougar
Tennis.
