Both teams traded baskets in the beginning stages of both halves, but two Cougar runs defined the game. There was first a 6-0 spurt that gave Washington State a 14-point lead with 2:37 remaining in the first half. Then another 7-0 run that gave WSU a comfortable 77-58 lead with 6:25 to play.

The Colonels committed 19 turnovers.

BIG PICTURE

Nicholls: The Colonels fall to 1-2 on the year and will look to bounce back when they face the Idaho Vandals from the Big Sky Conference. The game will be played in Moscow, Idaho, seven miles from Pullman.

Washington State, Arizona to kick off football at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in ESPN game

UPDATED: Sun., Nov. 11, 2018, 9:17 a.m.

By Theo Lawson of Spokane S-R

PULLMAN – A third straight Washington State football game will air nationally on ESPN, but it’ll come at the cost of another late start.

Taking advantage of a six-day selection window, ESPN picked up next Saturday’s game between No. 10 WSU and Arizona. Kickoff between the Cougars and Wildcats will be at 7:30 p.m. at Martin Stadium.

Both teams are coming off victories over Colorado. WSU (9-1, 6-1) routed the Buffaloes 31-7 on Saturday at Folsom Field in Boulder and Arizona (5-5, 4-3) took down CU 42-34 in Tucson prior to its bye week.

Saturday’s game will be WSU’s fifth on a national television network this season and fourth on ESPN. The Cougars, ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings entering the weekend, have been on ESPN each of the last two weeks in games against Cal and Colorado.

This will be the fourth game of WSU’s season with a start time of 7:30 p.m. or later. The Cougars played San Jose State in a game that kicked off at 8 p.m., while a Friday roadie at USC started at 7:30 p.m. and a home game against Cal two weeks ago began at 7:45 p.m.

Regardless of what happens against Arizona, the Cougars will only be able to win the Pac-12 North by beating Washington the following week in the Apple Cup – unless the heavily-favored Huskies lose to Oregon State on Saturday, in which case a WSU win over Arizona would seal the division title.

The Cougars close out the regular season playing two of the three Pac-12 teams they lost to in 2017. WSU will try to avenge a 58-37 defeat to the Wildcats in Tucson. The Cougars will be aiming for their 13th consecutive win at Martin Stadium.

The Pac-12 has set kickoff times and TV slots for the other games on Nov. 17: Utah at Colorado (10:30 a.m., Pac-12 Networks), USC at UCLA (12:30 p.m., FOX), Oregon State at UW (1:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), Stanford at Cal (4:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), Arizona State at Oregon (7:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks

No. 8 Washington State jumps Ohio State, LSU in Associated Press Top 25

UPDATED: Sun., Nov. 11, 2018, 5:59 p.m.

From Spokane S-R and AP

Washington State leapfrogged a pair of heavyweights in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top 25 poll, grabbing the No. 8 spot when the weekly rankings were released Sunday.

The Cougars, coming off a 31-7 victory at Colorado on Saturday, jumped past No. 9 Ohio State and No. 10 LSU while the rest of the Top 25 was fairly stable, especially at the top. Alabama remained a unanimous No. 1, followed by Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan and Georgia. Oklahoma was sixth and West Virginia seventh. UCF remained No. 11.

Northwestern, which sneaked in at No. 24, was ranked 17th at the end of last season, but lost three of four to start 2018.

Two other Pac-12 teams joined the Cougars in the latest edition of the AP rankings. Despite not playing, Washington jumped up three spots to No. 17. Utah beat Oregon without starting quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss, but the Utes stayed put at No. 21.

Arizona State and Stanford are both receiving AP Top 25 votes.

WSU went nowhere in the Amway Coaches Poll, staying at No. 9. The Huskies moved up one spot to No. 17 and the Utes jumped five spots to No. 19.

With Saturday’s win, WSU improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in Pac-12 play, its sixth straight victory this season. The Cougars will face Arizona (5-5, 4-3) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. as they go for their 13th straight win in Pullman.

Furious Rally Falls Just Short

The Cougs rallied late but fell to Saint Mary's 70-64.

From WSU Sports Info

PULLMAN, Wash. – A late fourth quarter rally came up just short Sunday afternoon in Beasley as Washington State women's basketball (0-2) dropped a 70-64 decision to Saint Mary's (2-0).

Down by as much as 13 with just over six minutes to play, the Cougars would battle their way back into the game behind a 15-4 run that gave WSU a shot at the lead. However, the comeback was not to be as senior Alexys Swedlund's go-ahead three from the corner rimmed out with :31 seconds to play while a game-tying floater by junior Chanelle Molina with :13 seconds remaining fell to the same fate. For the duo, the missed shot proved to be particularly rough as they had sparked the initial rally with three quick three-pointers that got the Cougars back within striking distance. The first two of the run came from Swedlund who tied and then broke WSU's all-time three-point record with her 161st and 162nd career triples. The Gaels would finish off the game from the line hitting four of their final six freebies.

The Cougars were forced to rally late against the Gaels after Saint Mary's took control of the game in the third quarter with turning a four-point halftime lead into a 14-point advantage through commanding performance in the paint and on the board. During the 16-6 run, the Gaels posted 10 points in the paint against the Cougars, breaking up what had been a close game for the first 20 minutes of action. When not hitting on the interior, the Gaels got a friendly roll off the iron and glass from deep hitting two of their five three-pointers early in the third quarter.

Quote of the Night

Head Coach Kamie Ethridge - "I just feel a little more encouraged after tonight, or today, after this game, this effort by our team. Obviously Saint Mary's is a very disciplined team, well coached. They brought some problems for us. I just liked the way our team competed. I know we didn't get the win, but I thought the improvement that we had from Monday night to tonight was unbelievably a lot and good. If we continue to put the pieces together I think we can be a good team."
