PULLMAN,
Wash. (AP) — In a story Aug. 9 about Washington State University being short of
dorm rooms, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the school is short
of rooms for incoming freshmen. The school has enough room for freshmen, but is
short of rooms for upperclassmen.
A
corrected version of the story is below:

PULLMAN,
Wash. (AP) — Washington State University is preparing to welcome the largest
freshman class in its history, and they are gobbling up dorm rooms that might
have gone to older students.
More than
4,300 freshmen, who are required to live on campus, are expected to fill the
school’s residence halls next week.
Officials
of the Pullman school say that leaves some 237 upperclassmen on a wait list for
a dorm room.
WSU
spokesman Phil Weiler says the upperclassmen may not get a dorm room and have
to find another place to live.

a dormitory that closed in 2015, to accommodate incoming freshman men.

MIKE LEACH: Gardner Minshew had the best
scrimmage of Coug QBs
Aug 11, 12:50 AM Cougfan.com
PULLMAN – Mike Leach wasn’t
quite ready to offer any clarity on the QB race after the first scrimmage. But
he did say Gardner Minshew had the best showing of the quarterbacks.
“I thought he looked real sharp,” Leach said of Minshew.
Leach said Trey Tinsley rebounded in his second series leading the offense, and Anthony Gordon had a tough night but has had a really good fall camp.
Leach also indicated he won’t continue all next week with three QBs in the rotation, (and likely will trim the QB competition down to two
Third-year sophomore walk on Clay Markoff (5-9, 235) is listed as a fullback and got some run – he may be one of the new wrinkles this season. Asked how he might be utilized, Leach said “as a blocker … we’re toying with some stuff there.”
Leach was pleased with thr work of DL Will Rodgers III and Willie Taylor III in the scrimmage and overall, on the first scrimmage of fall camp, Leach said “it was a good scrimmage to start with, because I thought it was competitive from top to bottom.”

Gardner Minshew lights up when talking
about Coug RB Max Borghi
Cougfan.com
PULLMAN – As a
veteran, Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew has seen a lot of players
during his college football career. When asked about the future of freshman
running back Max Borghi, the quarterback lit up.
"Max is going to be so good," Minshew said.
During the first scrimmage of the fall on Friday night in Martin
Stadium, Minshew seemed to count on Borghi when it came to finding an escape
valve on pass plays, hitting him three times during one drive.
"He can catch the ball," Minshew said. "He can
run the ball. He runs hards and he's also one of the fastest guys on our
team."
WSU SCRIMMAGE: Gardner Minshew takes big

PULLMAN – Garnder
Minshew took advantage of the first scrimmage of fall camp and made his case
for why he should be the front-runner in the Cougs quarterback race. He
completed 7-of-8 passes on his first drive, easily leading the offense down the
field before finding wide receiver Brandon Arconado for a touchdown over the
middle.
"I thought he (Minshew) had the best scrimmage," Mike
Leach said. "I thought Gardner looked real sharp. He missed some balls
down there (around the goal line) but other than that I thought he threw pretty
well."
The second drive for Minshew wasn't as head turning as the
first, but he still looked in control at all times, finishing 5-of-8 on the
drive including finding freshman running back Max Borghi out of the backfield a
number of times.
Minshew finished the night 11-of-15 for 115 yards with 2
touchdowns and no interceptions.
"We brought the energy I feel like on both of those
drives," Minshew said. "I had guys make plays on both of those
drives."
Leach indicated he will cut down the quarterback competition to
two this coming week between Minshew, Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon.
After struggling on his first drive on Friday night, Tinsley
looked more calm and collected on the second one, completing 8-of-10 passes
including a nice 30-yard route down the middle of the field to Arconado. He
finished the night with a perfect corner route in the end zone that was brought
in by Easop Winston Jr. Overall, Tinsley completed 12 of 19 passes for 105
yards, with two touchdowns against one interception.
Gordon had an off night, completing just 4 of 14 passes for 25
yards. Leach was quick to say after the scrimmage Gordon had a tough outing,
but has had a really good fall camp.
DEFENSIVELY, THE D-LINE DUO of
defensive end Will Rodgers III and RUSH linebacker Will Taylor III were the
stars of the evening.
Taylor broke up two passes and had 1 1/2 sacks while Rodgers
provided pressure in the backfield.
Overall, the defense recorded six sacks and two interceptions –
one by cornerback Armani Marsh on a tipped ball and one by linebacker Dominick
Silvels.
Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys credited the work ethic of
both Rodgers and Taylor.
"All that goes back to they had great summer
workouts," Claeys said.
More observations from the first scrimmage:
·
True freshman QB Cammon Cooper was also given two series, going
7-for-14 for 64 yards and one interception.
·
Jamire Calvin showed off his speed and ability to get open
during the night in having the best scrimmage of the wide receivers. The
sophomore caught 6 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
·
Arconado had a big night in the end zone, catching two touchdown
passes on three receptions, totaling 57 yards.
·
Borghi put a move on two defenders after catching a pass that
turned heads.
·
Defensive lineman Hunter Mattox led the defense with 2 sacks.
None of the sacks came against the first team offensive line.
·
Liam Ryan started in place of Josh Watson at left guard. Leach
said yesterday that that battle was going back and forth.
·
Nickel back Halid Djibril, linebacker Fa’avae Fa’avae and safety
Tyrese Ross led the stop corps on the night, all recording five tackles apiece.
·
Both field goal kickers -- Jack Crane and Blake Mazza -- connected
on 2-of-3 attempts. Crane nailed a 42-yard field goal for the longest of the
night.
·
Wide receiver Kyle Sweet took part in non-contact drills but did
not play in the scrimmage.
·
Defensive end Nnamdi Oguayo, defensive end Logan Tago and
defensive end Derek Moore were not seen. Leach said they were "doing exactly
what we want 'em to and expect to see them shortly."
