PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State head women's basketball coach Kamie Ethridge made her first coaching move of the new era as she announced the addition of associate head coach Laurie Koehn. Koehn spent the last three seasons on the bench with Ethridge at Northern Colorado.

"I am so excited to introduce Laurie Koehn as my associate head coach," said Ethridge. "Laurie brings a wealth of experience as an elite level athlete, player development coach, and brilliant recruiter. Laurie will have 'hands on' every area of our program because of her unique abilities to teach, develop, and relate to student-athletes. Our players will relish the opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business. We are fortunate to have her join Cougar Nation!"

A longtime Ethridge acolyte, Koehn spent the majority of her time with the Bears in hands on instruction on the court. An experienced teacher and player, Koehn was able to help Ethridge create versatile and skilled players that finished with a program-record 26 wins in 2017-18 en route to Northern Colorado's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Prior to coaching with Ethridge, Koehn spent 11 years playing professionally both in the WNBA and oversees. She signed with the Washington Mystic in 2005, playing four seasons before moving exclusively overseas where she would play for teams in Poland, Turkey and Australia. Before finishing her overseas career in Austraila, Koehn spent one last season in the WNBA, playing for the Atlanta Dream in 2012.

Among the collegiate ranks, Koehn established herself as one of the greatest outside shooters in NCAA history during her time playing for Ethridge at Kansas State. An All-Big 12 honoree as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-American during her playing days, Koehn left Kansas State as the all-time NCAA record-holder for three-pointers made with 392.

Koehn earned her bachelor's degree in social science from Kansas State.

WSU, Pullman police sergeants under investigation for sexual misconduct

UPDATED: Thu., April 19, 2018, 6:07 a.m.

By Chad Sokol

Spokane S-R

Two police sergeants are under investigation after an 18-year-old Washington State University student claimed she was sexually assaulted by a law enforcement officer.

One of the sergeants works for the Pullman Police Department, the other for the WSU Police Department. Officials from both agencies confirmed Wednesday that the sergeants are on paid administrative leave. The Washington State Patrol is conducting a criminal inquiry, and internal investigations may follow.

“We take the allegation seriously,” Pullman police Chief Gary Jenkins said. “We’re fully cooperating with the Washington State Patrol in their investigation.”

Details of the student’s allegation were not immediately available Wednesday, and it wasn’t clear if she had specified which sergeant allegedly assaulted her.

A search warrant filed Monday in Spokane County Superior Court indicates both sergeants made contact with the student after she was out drinking on the night of March 30. The warrant lists a potential charge of “custodial sexual misconduct in the first degree.”

The Pullman sergeant reported that he stopped the student sometime that evening, warned her about underage drinking and then gave her a “courtesy transport” to her dorm at Community/Duncan Dunn Hall, a building near Greek Row mostly reserved for freshmen.

The Pullman sergeant also reported that he told the student to stay in the building for the rest of the night and made sure she got inside before driving away.

But later, shortly after midnight, the WSU sergeant was driving past the building and noticed the student stumbling around at the base of some stairs, clearly intoxicated, according to the search warrant. He questioned her, ordered her to go back inside and informed her he would recommend a charge for underage drinking to the prosecutor’s office, according to the search warrant.

On April 6, the student filed a complaint with WSU’s Office for Equal Opportunity, which is bound by a federal law mandating student confidentiality. While the office could not disclose details of the complaint, it did notify the campus police department, which immediately placed its sergeant on leave, Assistant Chief Steve Hansen said.

Jenkins, the Pullman police chief, said he suspended the other sergeant on April 13, the day the department was notified about the complaint by WSU police.

WSP Detective Larry McGill obtained the search warrant this week because he needed a judge’s order to get the confidential records from WSU.

McGill also searched the sergeants’ patrol cars and cellphones, finding no evidence of semen or digital contact with the student, according to the search warrant. Citing unnamed sources, McGill wrote that “the alleged crime may have taken place in the back seat of a police vehicle.”

Trooper Jeff Sevigney, a WSP spokesman, said Wednesday he couldn’t comment on whether detectives had made direct contact with the student.

State Board gives UI time to fix athletic budget deficit; sports won't be cut at this time

4/19/2018 Lewiston Trib

MOSCOW — The Idaho State Board of Education granted a waiver Thursday morning allowing the University of Idaho to pursue a multi-year financial plan to address a budget deficit within the athletic department.

Three sports at the institution — women’s swim and dive, men’s golf and women’s soccer — were in immediate danger of elimination after the Vandal athletic department projected a budget deficit of about $1 million at the end of the fiscal year. The university previously avoided another monetary shortfall in the spring of 2017 when it received a waiver to address its deficit.

In response to the dilemma earlier this month, UI President Chuck Staben requested an additional waiver which would help prevent the institution from making immediate cost-cutting measures to the athletic department. The motion, which was moved by SBOE athletics chair Richard Westerberg, passed without any dissenting votes.

DOWNTOWN PULLMAN ON GRAND AVENUE

Pullman trains see growing pains: Whitman County Historical Society takes aim at a new restoration project in downtown Pullman: The historic ‘Pufferbelly’ Depot (Northern Pacific Depot)

4/19/2018 Moscow Pullman Daily News

The old Pufferbelly Depot — constructed in 1917 and operational until 1970 — has been sagging into a state of disrepair on the edge of Pullman’s downtown for years, but it could soon be the site of a massive restoration effort if the Whitman County Historical Society can raise the necessary money. A steering committee will meet today to decide what must be done to convert the entire property into a museum. WCHS purchased the former Northern Pacific Depot in early March with the help of a $300,000 loan from an anonymous donor, those close to the project say.
